Who hasn’t dreamed of engaging in swordplay? Movie lore has brought fencing to the big screen with swashbuckler movies like The Three Musketeers, Robin Hood, Zorro and Pirates of the Caribbean.

Even James Bond has it mastered in his repertoire of spy skills, brought to life in “Die Another Day.”

Fencing expert slices stereotype

When I heard that an instructor named Werner Meudt had started a fencing program at the South County YMCA, I was hoping for a Prussian taskmaster with a thick accent and a strict manner.

A dueling scar, too.

Maybe a monocle.

There’s not much to do in Monticello. It’s a small town located in the Panhandle bend about 30 miles east of Florida State University. It doesn’t even have a traffic light. Several local fencing clubs recently participated in the Super Sabre Sunday tournament held at the Hillel School. Sunshine Donaldson of Tallahassee brought her 5-year-old daughter, Alexa, and 8-year-old son, Chance, to watch the tae kwon do competition, but they arrived too late. They decided to watch fencing.

“I love fencing,” Alexa said after watching the competition for some time.

“It’s something new to us,” Donaldson said. “We’ve never seen anything like this before.”
