Hanna Thompson, with an Olympic silver medal draped around her neck, arrived into Rochester today to a warm welcome after leading the U.S. women’s foil team to its first Olympic medal at the Summer Olympics in Beijing, China.

Defeats Longtime Rival Garden City

The Great Neck South High School boys’ fencing team led by Coach Robert Pirano became Nassau County Team Champions after defeating rival Garden City High School. After a bronze third place finish last year, South was eager for gold. In the regular season Great Neck South posted an 8-2 record beating the undefeated and long time rivals Garden City High School as well.

 COLUMBUS, OHIO — Jeff Spear, a sophomore from Wynantskill, N.Y., gave Columbia its second NCAA fencing champion in two years, and third in the past four years, when he defeated the favored, top-ranked Mike Momtselidze of Ohio State, 15-10, in the men’s sabre championship bout Sunday, March 16, the final day of the NCAA Championships at Ohio State.

QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John’s men’s fencing, senior Luther Clement and junior Stan Vaksman, fell short today of the bronze medals at the 2008 NCAA National Championships held at St. John Arena at The Ohio State University. The Red Storm advanced both qualifiers into direct elimination, which features the top four fencers in each weapon.

A team competing for a fencing title after being blitzed by injuries and losing a slew of its top seniors would seem tantamount to attempting a crème brûlée recipe without eggs. But with the Great Neck North boys and girls teams holding 7-2 records in the Nassau County division, coach Stan Vaksman is proving to be quite the gourmet chef.

As I entered the Life Christian Church in Troy this month, I thought: “I hope I don’t stab anyone.”

I wasn’t there to break any of the Ten Commandments, but to check out Renaissance Fencing, a club that meets three times a week in an outbuilding rented from the church. The club’s manager, Stanna Stoner, had offered to give me a rudimentary fencing lesson.
