Fencing’s Courser Repeats, Team Excels At NE Championship

SOUTH HADLEY, MA (February 23, 2009) — The Vassar Women’s Fencing Team earned a series of first-time achievements at the New England Fencing Championships that speak volumes about the type of season the Brewers have prouced in 2008-09. For openers, Vassar finished third overall out of 14 teams, the best finish ever in program history. The Epee squad earned a squad title for a program first time and sophomore Sophie Courser (Warner, NH) became Vassar’s first two-time New England Champion in the Epee.

NEW YORK – Columbia will travel to Providence, R.I. for the second part of the Ivy League Fencing Championships, taking place at Brown, beginning at 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Both the Lion men and women suffered a loss to the current first-place teams during the first part of the Ivy League Championships, held February 8 at Columbia’s Levien Gym.

Staten Island’s quest for the borough’s first PSAL boys’ fencing city championship came up empty yesterday as McKee/Staten Island Tech and Tottenville both lost in the city semifinals at Roberto Clemente State Park in the Bronx.
