fopee!

“fopee” is the new word to describe foilists who fence epee without changing their style. (It began with the sabreurs inventing “soil” to describe the way foilists fence sabre – and further new words will follow).

Hurleys ranked 1-2

Web Posted: 06/15/2007 12:18 AM CDT

San Antonio Express-News

San Antonio‘s Courtney and Kelley Hurley are ranked 1-2 in the country in the women’s epée after the first four events of the World Cup fencing season.

Points from World Cup meets, as well as upcoming zonal and world championships, will be used to determine the field for the 2008 Olympics. The women’s epée in Beijing will have 24 competitors, with just two from each zone — in the Hurleys’ case, the Americas.

Still, still has the skill

Published Thursday, June 21, 2007 by Mario Sarmento

When Sally Still failed to make the US Olympic fencing team back in 1988, she figured that was the end of her competitive career. In fact, she put her “epee” away to concentrate on law school. Aside from competing in the 1994 Olympic Festival, she did not touch her weapon for more than a decade.

2012 Olympics hopefuls: Jon Willis, fencer

Great start – now make sure the best is yet to come

By Alan Hubbard

Published: 22 April 2007

Not every 2012 Olympics hopeful is currently a teenage tiro. Jon Willis is 26, which means by the time of the London jamboree he will be 31, a veteran in these days of young people’s games but, he reckons, an age which will see him at the peak of his. This happens to be fencing, a sport in which Britain has never had a men’s Olympic champion. But Willis is ready to have a stab at it, in every sense.

Last month he became the first British épée fencer in over a quarter of a century to win a World Cup event with his victory at the Hedenheimer Pokal in Germany, which in fencing-speak is big licks, the most prestigious competition outside the Olympics and world championships, with a field of 195 top international duellists.

fencing for eggs

The one-hit epee began well, with an unexpected win. After that it was downhill. The next bout was a double defeat and after that I lost six in a row. One loss left me cross with myself as my opponent missed a hit giving me a perfect opportunity – but I didn’t attach the blade and he got me.
