Two members of the Edson Double E Fencing Club will go against the best the nation has to offer this Thursday (June 25) in Saskatoon.

Twelve-year-old Ryan Halterman and 14-year-old Cody Sahlin will compete at the Canadian Fencing Federation National Championships June 25 to 28. Both will be competing in the cadet Under-15 epée division

Richmond-based Dynamo Fencing Club will host the provincial open championships April 18 and 19 at the Richmond Olympic Oval.

Several top athletes and coaches will be attending the tournament including Laurie Shong, one of Canada’s best epee fencers and a former cadet world champion. He was the first Canadian Olympian to compete in two different sports at one Olympics, namely modern pentathlon and fencing

Alex Whitehead earned his first gold, with a victory in junior men’s sabre. Teammate Charles Hutchings picked up the silver, while Stephen Cuthbertson and Conrad Bielicki won bronze. In cadet, Hutchings took gold, while Whitehead and Cuthbertson earned silver and bronze, respectively. Jonathan Soper of Kingston Fencing Club claimed the other bronze

There’s another Battle of Alberta that isn’t so well known, and if quantity alone was any indication, Edmonton is trailing Calgary when it comes to the sport of fencing.

Edmonton has a total of three clubs, including the University of Alberta, while Calgary has eight clubs.

There are about three dozen fencing clubs in Ontario — and many have some pretty neat names: Excalibur, Sword Players Fencing, Niagara Swordsmen, Metro Blades, Cutting Edge Fencing and Bladeworks. It’s clear that the draw for fencing, at least for kids, is swordplay — and I mean, really, who hasn’t wanted to be a pirate?
