Aug. 19 (Bloomberg) — Even the casual sports fan would probably recognize the name Keith Smart. His game-winning jump shot not only gave Indiana University the 1987 college basketball championship, it made him a Hoosier hero.

Well, there’s another, though far less famous, Keeth Smart, whose athletic fortunes at the most crucial of moments tipped toward tears. Keeth Smart was on center stage, with the ball in his hands, so to speak, when the big game, or match, as they say in fencing, was lost.
