Americans rebound to nab bronze in women’s sabre August 22, 2008

BEIJING — A nap, a bottle of Sprite, and the camaraderie of three good friends helped the United States claim a bronze medal in Olympic women’s team sabre competition today.

Sabre Team Takes Bronze
The U.S. sabre team earned a bronze medal by defeating France, 45-38, at the Fencing Hall and Convention Center.

The U.S. trio of Sada Jacobson, Mariel Zagunis and Becca Ward were favored to win the gold medal after sweeping the individual medals. But they lost to Ukraine in the semifinals.

Olympics: Top-seeded American fencers net bronze

BEIJING (AP) — The Ukrainian women’s sabre team shocked the top-seeded U.S. in the Olympic semifinals Thursday, eliminating an American team that featured all three individual medalists. The U.S. did go on to win the bronze, however, defeating France 45-38.
