Cuba increased its Olympic berths to 131 in 16 sports with two first places won by fencers in the 2008 Olympic qualifier held in Queretaro, Mexico.
Out of five Cuban fencers taking part in the tournament, Mailyn Gonzalez (saber) and Misleidys Company (foil) were included in the medal standings. Gonzalez earned her ticket to the Beijing Olympics by beating her opponent from Argentine Maria Belen Perez 15-11. Likewise, Company did the same in a hard-fought extra time duel against Chile’s Barbara Garcia Azua.
